The American Academy of Periodontology estimates that about 50% of adults have some type of gum disease. The early stage of gum disease, known as gingivitis, is characterized by red, swollen gums that bleed when you floss. Gingivitis is a completely reversible condition that can be repaired through non-invasive treatment and proper home care.
When gingivitis is left untreated it can lead to a more serious form of gum disease known as Periodontitis. Periodontitis is a serious gum infection that damages the soft tissue and destroys the bone that supports your teeth. Periodontitis can cause tooth loss or worse; it has been linked to an increased risk of heart attack, stroke and uncontrolled diabetes.
Dr. Heller offers several periodontal treatments to help you fight off gum disease: diagnosis and treatment through scaling and root planning (deep cleanings), periodontal maintenance, and surgical intervention.
